Jocelyn Urbina
at UC Davis, class of 2027!
We asked some of our former students to report back about their college experience so far. Jocelyn is our highlight for May! Here's what she has to say about her campus.
What do you like about UC Davis?
"I love many things about Davis, but one of my favorites is the easily accessible bike routes that lead to classes all around campus and even the downtown area. I have come to enjoy the biking lifestyle and all the beautiful scenery on campus."
What is something that surprised you
about UC Davis?
"Davis has an arboretum where many go to take walks, look at ducks, have picnics, and take grad photos..I like to go there on breaks and read or listen to music. I have also loved finding new spots in downtown Davis to explore with friends - from bookstores to coffee shops, boba spots, and restaurants, the downtown area is just a short bike ride away. The Amtrak station is also conveniently located right at the edge of downtown, which is perfect for weekends when I want to go home.On weekends when I don't go home, I explore downtown with friends, visit the arboretum, and go to Sacramento on Sundays to attend a church I'm connected to. This past month (April) was the Year of the Egghead!"
What are you studying/involved in?
"Davis offers many resources, from career to tutoring and informational sessions, which can be overwhelming in a good way! Although I came into the school year thinking I wanted to be a Biochemistry and Molecular Biology major, my first quarter experience and past summer internship helped me realize that maybe that wasn’t what was calling me. I am now in the process of switching to Human Development, where I will either work towards nursing or speech-language pathology - I'm not completely sure yet. I also want to minor in public health."
Fun fact you’ve learned about UC Davis?
"A cool fun fact I didn't know about Davis until I stepped on campus is that there are five different sculptures featuring eggheads all around campus. Each one has a different name and adds personality to the campus. My favorite is the "Bookhead" right in front of the library. They say that if you rub the head before a final or midterm, it grants you good luck! I have realized that everyone in college is on their own journey, and it has been exciting to come across students from all different backgrounds and on all different paths."
What did UniVarsity Help You With?
"UniVarsity has been a valuable experience for me. It has helped me reflect on my personal styles and preferences, and understand the importance of finding things that align with them. This was a crucial factor that helped me make the decision to change my major and pursue something that better fits my learning style and passions. I am grateful for the guidance provided by UniVarsity when we were searching for colleges that would be personalized to my needs, and I strongly believe that once in college, it is essential to explore majors and possible career paths that align with your personal goals and interests."
Doing anything fun on the weekends?
"Meeting people on the train has been an amazing experience - that is where I learned about the Human Development major and where I also met someone who works with children in the Speech-Language Pathology field!"
